your child’s first dental visit
The first visit to the dentist can be made very early depending on the need but generally it will be recommended within 6 months of the eruption of the first tooth. Thereafter, a follow-up examination as well as a cleaning will be recommended every 6 months so that your child maintains optimal dental health. If you think your child has a cavity, you see staining, a broken tooth, they are in pain or have any questions, don’t hesitate to come and see us.
There are several reasons to regularly bring your child to the dentist:
- To find out if the hygiene of your child’s teeth and gums is adequate.
- To learn our best tips to facilitate your child care.
- Your dentist will be able to detect problems from the beginning and remedy them quickly.
- Your child will learn to take good care of his teeth and will get into the habit of visiting the dentist to prevent dental problems.
- Your child will receive professional and well adapted treatments to his dental condition.
Also, it is during this visit that your dentist will be able to tell you if teeth that grow in an inadequate or overlapping position can cause problems. In many cases, the teeth will straighten naturally as your child’s jaw grows and permanent teeth appear. In case they do not recover, your child may have difficulty chewing properly; this is called malocclusion. The latter can cause problems eating and cleaning teeth. It can also affect the appearance of your child who may not feel comfortable. Your dentist may suggest appropriate solutions to remedy it such as orthodontic treatments.
Prepare for the first visit
You can prepare your child for their first visit by explaining the progress of an appointment with the dentist. Tell them about the chair on which they will be sitting, the gloves and mask that the dentist and hygienist wear to observe their teeth. You could also choose a book that tells the story of a character who lives their first experience with the dentist. Children love stories and it will undoubtedly reassure them. Show enthusiasm for their first visit to the dentist and allow them to bring their favourite plush or toy. Remember that your dental professionals are used to working with children and that they have several tricks in their pocket for your little one to live their first visit as a great success. However please do not tell your child that the dentist will use a needle to numb their mouth as this will unnecessarily stress them out.
This important first visit for the child will be an opportunity to meet the dentist and the hygienist who will make sure to create a bond of trust with your child. They will carry out an oral examination and if possible a cleaning. They will also take the opportunity to inform you about essential dental care for children for a healthy mouth.
